Many Voices Many Beats One City

This exuberant aerosol mural on the side of a general store in Anacostia depicts people and buildings as abstract hi-fi speakers dancing and sometimes flying to the thumping music of the local scene. The mural honors Go-Go godfather Chuck Brown, shown in silhouette atop the 20-foot-high “Big Chair” that has been a neighborhood landmark since 1926. Words, Beats & Life, a nonprofit arts academy dedicated to a broadly defined hip-hop style, has produced many murals as part of a citywide “graffiti abatement” effort designed to provide arts training for youth.
